Making peace with nature environmental peacebuilding for sustainable development

A half-day event on environmental peacebuilding

Through a series of presentations from respected experts, Indigenous Peoples, and young professionals, this session showcased initiatives in environmental peacebuilding and discussed their relevance to building a healthy, prosperous planet and fostering just and sustainable peace.

This event is a collaboration between the Geneva Peacebuilding Platform, Normandy Chair for Peace, Environmental Peacebuilding Association, University for Peace, International Union for Conservation of Nature Commission on Environmental, Economic, and Social Policy, the International Council of Environmental Law, Swedwatch, and the Working Group for Peace and Development (FriEnt).

Symposium on judges and the environment: The impact of the Stockholm declaration in shaping global environmental law and jurisprudence

A two-day Symposium brought together Supreme Court Justices and senior judges as key actors in the implementation of the Environmental Rule of Law. It was held in conjunction with the United Nations’ Stockholm+50 Conference commemorating the 50th anniversary of the original United Nations Conference on the Human Environment in 1972.

Through this event, suggestions were collected for a GJIE Plan, developed by and for judges, for the next decades in order to improve Environmental Rule of Law and establish the role of an independent judiciary in fulfilling environmental law promises and safeguarding recognized environmental rights. The NCP participated at the Keynotes at the following sessions:

Making peace with nature – a consultation on international law

The NCP held a small Consultation of international law and policy experts being convened on June 1, 2022, in Stockholm, Sweden, on the eve of the United Nations Stockholm+50 Meeting. This event is a collaboration between the UN-Mandated University for Peace, the Normandy Chair for Peace and the International Council of Environmental Law.

“Stockholm+50: a healthy planet for the prosperity of all – our responsibility, our opportunity”

An international meeting convened by the United Nations General Assembly to be held in StockholmAn where interested parties are invited to share their experiences and initiatives to help build a healthy planet for the prosperity of all. It will commemorate the 50 years since the 1972 United Nations Conference on the Human Environment, which made the environment a pressing global issue for the first time.

The Chair emeritus, professor Nicholas Robinson and the general coordinator, Emilie Gaillard are proud to be delegates in the University for Peace aside its dean, Juan Carlos Sainz-Borgo at the Opening session of the World Earth summit at Stockholm.
